Row 2 COMPLETE

2nd row complete…this one almost took a month but it’s done!

wee design wall

itty-bitty-design-wall-3-25-09

Since I haven’t the space much less the $ to invest in a design wall I made my own out of a long unused lap desk, some flannel and ribbon to keep the flannel on there…work dandy for laying out the small many pieced blocks of the Dear Jane quilt and it’s kissing cousin the Dear Elaine quilt I’m making at the same time.  I can easily layout a block and then tuck it under my rocking chair till I’m ready for a bout of hand piecing. 🙂

a10-witch-points-westa11-yanez-protesta12-momz-in-a-fancy-framea13-work-day-or-nightRow A complete in 11 days…whew!

I am having so much fun and satisfaction doing the Dear Jane quilt by hand. I finished the 1st row in 11 days, and that was with at least 2 blocks that really made me think.
I ordered the next book by the author of Dear Jane…hopefully in a couple weeks I’ll be picking up Dear Hannah.
I’ve started compiling Dear Yane…a quilt based on these but all blocks of either my creation or blocks that are in neither the Jane nor Hannah. The Yane blocks will be 6 square when finished rather than 4.5, so Yane will be a bit larger. And rather than triangle blocks on the edge there will be more 6 inch blocks turned on point. This could prove interesting. I hope to incorporate fabric origami, cathedral windows, block with appliquéd scenes and tactile goodies like buttons, ribbon and lace on the yane!  I may have to invest in some real quilt display devices rather than the thumb tacks I’ve been using up until now!

Quilting Contemplation

dear-jane-row-a-wally

Seems to me quilts made ‘in the good ol’ days’ always had a few stories in them.  They were made from scraps of clothing, linens out grown clothing that had been passed down through every child in the family and occasionally cousins, in-laws and grands…every wee piece of cloth had a story if only to the quilter herself or the lucky recipient of the lovie.

Now we make quilts of fabric purchased just for the quilt…or a kit…sigh, if need be we really don’t need to put much thought into our quilts.  Mind you I’m for surely not speaking of anyone in particular or me even… But as I go through fabric and quilting sites, catalogs and stores…everything is ‘just right’…the colors go together, the patterns have a ‘family’ so we don’t really have to put effort into it if we don’t want to.

We of the Dear Jane sect and any other tiny block see the work that was put into the original quilt…we’re attempting the same.  But we have a book with patterns, even EQ.  Can you imagine doing any of this from scratch?  With perhaps paper from a mailed letter, a ruler if we’re lucky, chunk of pencil we sharpen with a knife…scraps from our dresses, the curtains, some dish cloths a needle, thread and hopefully a thimble?  And that’s it…nothing else…I though my cloth diapers were a chore with my youngest daughter…

I am counting my blessing as I make my dear Jane…and I’m adding a story to every block so when it’s done I can read my quilt to my family and each person will see how important they are to me.  How each event I make a block for, how every place I make a block for holds memories I hold dear.  I think I’m more than merely making a quilt I’m creating a kind of family/friends history tree.  I come from a blended family, so my many siblings, cousins, uncles, aunties, grandparents are all going to be noted with blocks, my girls, my daughter who died, my sweet grandson, me best friend who’s been there forever and her girls and grand kids…pets, towns, droughts, floods, storms…remember when…

Hmmm…thus my ramble come to an end… J

Birth of A9

how-a9-3-4-2009

in the beginning of A9…there was a WAY too complicated and tiny image on the page…not wanting to cut out every wee piece and try real hard to piece it and probably either fail miserably or frustrate myself to fits… I slapped a small piece of muslin unceremoniously over the picture, traced it…and wa-la…a foundation was born!

3 hours and 2 TV shows later the block was actually done…sometimes I even shock myself and this is said with no ego at all…I am truly shocked that I finished this block so fast!

Block: A9

Title: Trailer Park Fever

Original Name: Cabin Fever

Why: Let’s face it…older house trailer let’s say 1973, are a lot like a cabin or even smaller and more confining.  March has just started and there’s snow, rain, sleet, below zero wind chills…cabin fever abounds, granted not the B horror movie type of cabin fever, but a fever of some sort nonetheless. I changed the pattern a bit for ease of construction.

Block completed: March 4th 2009

Number of pieces = 37

Hand pieced on a muslin foundation, all cotton then backed with iron on interfacing so it will survive till the moment when all the blocks are done and finally pieced together.

Color contemplation

having too much time to think before the Dear Jane book arrived at the quilt shop…I decided that since my version of dear Jane was not going to have any reproduction fabrics or be at all ‘vintage’ in appearance…I through together a color map to keep myself on the straight and narrow when it came to fabric purchasing

looks kinda confusing I’m sure…but the rows are here along with the corner and triangle edges…it will be a great big eye cooking rainbow when finally complete!

Signature Block Idea

dear-jane-signature-block-contemplation

February 19th 2009

Happy Birthday my sweet Lima Bean Man!

During lunch munching I created the signature block for the dear Jane quilt.  I gave her a more fan-tab-u-lous name too to fit the extream silliness I will be putting into this quilt!

I will of course making the pony tails red to match my current shade of bottle hair color, and adding some blue to the jaunticed eyes!

Block: A1

Title: Pinwheel Gone Awry

Why: Well…1st block…too timid to change the name

# Of pieces: 28

Block completed: February 26th 2009

Hand pieced, all cotton then backed with iron on interfacing so it will survive till the moment when all the blocks are done and finally pieced together.

story of my Jane

February 18th 2009

In the beginning I was searching for something to keep me occupied, yeah like I have absolutely nothing to do otherwise (dripping with sarcasm) K I guess I was searching the forever search for something to add to my pile of things to keep insanity at bay.  Dear Jane reared her busy body head.  I’ve done foundation piecing once, yeah 1 entire time.  I’m a totally self-taught quilt via books and trial & error.  I Googled dear Jane quilt and found the busiest quilt I think I’ve ever seen. 169 (I think that correct) blocks, 52 triangles and 4 corners…all different.  I think that’s what caught my eye…ALL DIFFERENT…no repetition…an obsessive-compulsive insomniacs dream activity!

Thus my adventure begins!  I’ve ordered the book from my local quilt shop, Heavenly Patchwork of Waconia, it should be in next week.  And I’ve picked out a yard of backing and the fabrics for the 1st rows worth of blocks.

I plan my monstrosity to have light batik backgrounds and either novelty, modern, or flamboyant batiks for the colors.  BOOWAHAHAHA…Dear Jane has possessed me and I’m not looking for an exorcist!  Thus the name of my quilt:
Cornea-Sizzling-Synapse-Frying-Dear-Jane-s-a-Pain-in-the-Quilt

finally back to sewing!

I’m all ready for the next 2 baby showers as long as we know one’s a girl and the other’s a boy…Sooooo if you invite me…please check on that one little detail so I bring the correct shade of gift. Each set has matching bibs (3), burp cloths (3) receiving blanket (1) and owl/cat rattle/tag toy. Wicked cuteness! These were completed March 16th 2014

Made 2 piles of Teeny Tears diapers size large – up to 32 week gestation sized.  Will be adding matching caps to each set.  No idea where these will be going yet so they will be residing with the rest waiting for a hospital to adopt. March 17th 2014

Made a pile of girlie angel pockets for angels too tiny and fragile to dress…then I moved onto the boy pile and promptly sewed it together wrong…well Olivia has a lovey for this rather unattractive doll to live in now…I put the boy pile together correctly before I’m even going to get near the sewing machine! March 17th 2014

Owl/Cat Rattle/Tag toys…and 3 pointing the way squeaker/tag toys.  The owl/cats will be joining matching bibs/burp cloths/receiving blankets…the pointer toys will be going where ever they can. March 16th 2014

Slightly crooked, on purpose, bunny wall-hanging for work for the next holiday… pretty adequate if I do say so myself… March 18th 2014
